Storyteller: Freelance B2B Interviewer and Writer

About the Role

Elite Editing is seeking experienced freelance journalists and content professionals to support our growing customer reference and case study programs. We call this our Storyteller role, and we are specifically looking for experienced professionals based in EMEA and APAC time zones.

Our Storytellers own the storytelling process from interview through finished draft. They lead kickoff calls with our clients and their internal stakeholders, interview their customers and subject matter experts (SMEs), identify the strongest narrative angles within the information they gather, and then write compelling case studies and customer reference stories that adhere to client-specific standards and style guides.

This is more than simply working through a list of prepared questions—or turning a transcript into copy. We need skilled storytellers who listen closely, recognize when an answer deserves further exploration, ask intelligent follow-up questions, identify the details that make a story worth telling, and then shape that material into polished, engaging content.

Our ideal freelancer has a journalism or professional interviewing background paired with extensive professional writing experience and strong editorial judgment. You should be comfortable speaking with senior business leaders, technical SMEs, and other professionals; able to quickly understand unfamiliar or complex subject matter; and skilled at transforming what you learn into a clear and compelling narrative.

What You’ll Do

You will:

• Conduct virtual kickoff calls with client stakeholders to understand the goals, context, audience, and desired direction of customer reference stories.
• Conduct virtual interviews with our clients’ customers and SMEs, often involving senior-level or highly technical professionals.
• Review project background materials and prepare for interviews in advance.
• Use provided interview guides as a starting point while adapting questions to the conversation.
• Ask thoughtful, unscripted follow-up questions that uncover meaningful details, examples, outcomes, challenges, and quotable insights.
• Identify and develop the strongest story angles from interviews, background materials, and client input.
• Write polished B2B case studies and customer reference stories based on the information you gather, following client-specific briefs, templates, standards, and style guides.
• Synthesize complex or technical information into accurate, accessible, and engaging narratives for the intended audience.
• Maintain a professional, confident, and personable presence while representing Elite and our clients on calls.
• Work collaboratively with Elite’s project managers, editors, and other members of the content team throughout the development and revision process.
• Follow client-specific processes, confidentiality requirements, and project instructions.

Job Requirements

Successful candidates must:

• Have substantial professional writing experience, with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to develop clear, engaging, publication-ready content.
• Have professional experience conducting interviews, preferably in journalism, B2B content, tech, publishing, corporate communications, or a related field.
• Be located in EMEA or APAC time zones.
• Have excellent spoken and written English and exceptional verbal communication skills.
• Be an exceptional listener who can think on their feet and pursue useful lines of questioning in real time.
• Be comfortable interviewing senior executives, business leaders, customers, and subject matter experts.
• Be able to absorb unfamiliar information quickly and ask credible, informed questions about complex topics.
• Have strong editorial judgment and be able to identify the narrative, details, and supporting evidence that will make a compelling story.
• Be able to synthesize interviews, transcripts, background materials, and client input into a cohesive finished piece.
• Be highly reliable, organized, responsive, and comfortable working within established processes and deadlines.
• Have a professional remote-work setup, including reliable high-speed internet and high-quality audio/video capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

We’re especially interested in candidates with one or more of the following:

• A professional journalism background, particularly experience developing reported stories from initial research and interviews through finished copy.
• Experience interviewing executives and subject matter experts.
• Experience with B2B technology, enterprise technology, SaaS, cloud computing, professional services, or other complex industries.
• Experience developing customer stories, customer reference content, case studies, thought leadership, or other long-form B2B content.
• Experience working with or for a content, marketing, communications, or creative agency.
• Familiarity with agency workflows in which freelancers work as part of a larger client delivery team.
• Experience conducting interviews and developing content on behalf of major brands or enterprise organizations.
• The ability to make interview subjects feel comfortable while keeping conversations focused and productive.

Prior agency experience is helpful but not required. We are much more interested in finding outstanding storytellers with excellent interviewing skills, writing ability, editorial judgment, curiosity, and professionalism.

Freelance Relationship

This is a freelance opportunity rather than a full-time staff position. Work will be offered based on project needs, Storyteller availability, subject-matter fit, and time zone.

Elite manages the broader client relationship, project workflow, and content production process. Freelancers work within established project parameters and compensation structures and collaborate with Elite’s internal team and other content professionals to deliver the work.

Because interviews are scheduled with clients and their customers, this work requires the ability to commit to agreed-upon call times and arrive fully prepared.
