Senior Editor
We are looking to build out our senior editorial team to help us ensure quality control on a variety of deliverables. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled editor of fiction, nonfiction, and content writing, and has a desire to work collaboratively. A key responsibility of the senior editor will be not only editing themselves, but reviewing others’ work and giving constructive feedback.
This is a remote, freelance (1099) position, approximately 10–15 hours a week, that requires general availability Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. EST, and a response time of 24 hours or less. Compensation starts at $25 an hour, and after training ends, pay can increase with the ability to earn more with reliable good work.
Responsibilities:
Editorial Quality Control
- A super detailed editorial eye and the ability to catch lingering typos or other egregious errors
- Extensive knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, and AP Style
- Ability to review and assess project deliverables for style, grammar, and product specifications
- Experience and demonstrated ability to follow and create style and process guides
- Experience using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function as well as editing in Google Drive
- Ensures processes are documented, standardized and updated regularly
Training and Leadership
- Natural leadership in establishing and motivating teams and developing their skills
- Train and onboard new editors to the line of work
- Receive and implement critique and editorial feedback
- Communicate with the Editorial Manager or Program Manager when editorial staffing is needed.
Scoping and Editorial Escalation Support
- Review and assess editorial complaints from clients and helps craft answers to clients’ editorial queries
- Assist the Editorial Manager or Program Manager in creation of style guides and process frameworks
- Support setup of the editorial workflow for new clients
A successful candidate will:
- Have a finely honed knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (and a passing knowledge of other style guides—chiefly the Associated Press Stylebook [AP]).
- Be comfortable offering feedback to writers and editors.
- Be able to work across multiple clients, learning their different style guides and standards.
- Be able to think big-picture about editorial teams: which teams need more people, which editors are strong and which may need training or reevaluation, which editors fit best with certain clients, etc.
- Be a strong communicator. You have clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, which help you to connect well with others.
- Be organized and confident. You are flexible, composed, and able to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously while confidently interacting with teammates.
- Be tech savvy and comfortable interacting, training, and managing teams in a remote environment (Gmail, Slack, Zoom, Dropbox, etc.).
- Thrive on collaborating with colleagues.
- Get excited about a good process document.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree a relevant field of study or equivalent work experience
- 3+ years of editing experience
- 2+ years in a similar role
- Mastery of the English language and The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition (and a passing knowledge of other style guides)
- Knowledge of SEO best practices/WordPress or similar content management systems/Adobe Creative Cloud/digital marketing concepts is a plus
